In a recent interview the former Liverpool captain and Kop legend Alan Hansen told how he has donated one of football's largest medal collections to the exhibits on display at the new Anfield showpiece.

He has also donated his shirts from two occasions that have gone down in Liverpool folklore, the 1984 European Cup win against AS Roma in Rome and the 1986 FA Cup Final win against Everton that clinched an historic double in Kenny Dalglish's first season as player-manager.

He admitted: "It is difficult to say which medal is my favourite. The first European Cup Final win that I played in against Bruges in 1978 was special.

Hansen said: "The 1984 European Cup Final in Rome was totally awesome because we went into the lion's den there and came out winners.

"It also completed a run in the competition where we always seemed to be up against it facing quality sides in a second leg away from Anfield.

"We drew 0-0 against Athletic Bilbao away and then won 1-0 in Spain. We played against Benfica, won only 1-0 at home and then 4-1 away, and then we played Dinamo Bucharest in the semi-final.

"They looked a real quality side, some said the best in the competition. We won 1-0 in the first leg - they could have scored about five - but we won 2-1 out there when Ian Rush got a couple.

"I don't think people bracket that team as being as good as the Liverpool side of 1978/79, but the 1984 side that won the title, the Milk Cup and the European Cup just had something about it, a resilience that saw it through difficult situations and difficult matches.

"The double win of 1986 was amazing too, because I remember saying to Kenny Dalglish after Everton turned us over 2-0 at Anfield late that season, a result that most people thought would win them the league, that it was the worst side of individuals I had ever played in.

"A few weeks later I was lifting the FA Cup as captain of a Liverpool team completing the second half of the double. It was just incredible - and shows how good my judgement is!!"
